A man is behind bars tonight after appearing in court charged over the murder of a woman in her Glasgow flat last week.
Brian Hughes was remanded in custody at Glasgow Sheriff Court today, Wednesday, March 25, 2026, following the death of Joanne Newlands.
The 39-year-old faces two charges after the 41-year-old was pronounced dead in her home on Tuesday, March 17.
Police had been called to her home, in Kirkton Avenue, Knightswood, at around 8pm on the day in question after receiving a report of concern for a person.
Police Scotland officers and the emergency services attended but Joanne was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hughes, of Broxburn, West Lothian, was arrested the day after Joanne was found dead but was later released.
The force revealed yesterday, Tuesday, March 24, that he had now been charged and was due to appear in court today.
At today's hearing he made no plea to the two charges he faces - murder and engaging in a course of conduct that was abusive of his partner.
He was committed for further examination and remanded in custody. No future court dates have been set, but he is expected to appear in the dock again next week.
WHen the murder probe into her death was launched, Detective Chief Inspector Gordon MacKenzie said: “Our thoughts are with Joanne’s family and friends at this time.
"We are providing them with support as our investigation continues. An extensive investigation is being carried out.
"We are working to establish the full circumstances of what happened in the days prior to Joanne’s death.
“I am appealing to anyone who may have any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact us as soon as possible.
Local Area Commander, Chief Inspector Karen Cameron, said: “We understand the significant impact this will have on the community and we would like to thank everyone for their help so far.
“There will be a continued police presence in the area as enquiries continue and anyone with any concerns can speak to officers.”
