The heartbroken family of Scottish football legend John Robertson have paid an emotional tribute to their loved one after he passed away on Christmas morning.

The 72-year-old, of Viewpark, Uddingston, Lanarkshire, lost his fight for life this morning after a long illness.

A statement released by his family through Nottingham Forest, where he won two European Cups, said: "It is with immense pain and sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful husband, dad and grandad.

"John passed away peacefully on Christmas morning with his wife and family by his side, after a long illness.

"Our only comfort in our grief is that his struggles are now over, and he is reunited with daughter Jessica.

"'Robbo' was treasured by many as a footballing hero but to us he was just John and dad, the family man - kind, loving, witty, fun and loyal.

"Although our hearts are breaking, we will always be grateful for the years we were privileged to share with him and the amazing memories we made. We will miss him every day and love him always."

He had two spells with Forest, from 1970 to 1983, then 1985 to 1986, winning the English First Division title, two League Cups, and the FA Charity Shield.

He also scooped two European Cups, in 1978 and 1979, and won the European Super Cup the same year.

The club said: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Nottingham Forest legend and dear friend, John Robertson.

"A true great of our Club and a double European Cup winner, John’s unrivalled talent, humility and unwavering devotion to Nottingham Forest will never ever be forgotten.

"Our thoughts are with John’s family, friends and all who loved him. Rest in peace, Robbo… Our greatest."

He played alongside Martin O'Neill with Forest and went on to work as assistant manager under the Irishman at both Celtic and Aston Villa.

A statement released by Celtic said: "Celtic Football Club is sad to learn of the passing of our former assistant manager, John Robertson. Our thoughts and prayers are with John's family today at such a difficult time for them all."

Aston Villa added: "Aston Villa Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing of John Robertson. John served as Assistant Manager at Villa Park during Martin O'Neill's spell in charge.

"The thoughts of everyone at the club are with John’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time."
