A murder suspect made his second court appearance today over the killing of his girlfriend, Joanne Newlands.
Brian Hughes was remanded in custody during a hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court today, Thursday, April 2, 2026.
The 49-year-old was fully committed for trial during the private hearing, where he made no plea to the two charges against him.
Hughes, of Broxburn, West Lothian, is accused of murder and engaging in an abusive course of conduct towards Joanne, in breach of the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act 2018.
No future court dates have been set.
Joanne, 41, was pronounced dead in her home in Glasgow's Knightswood area on Tuesday, March 17.
Police had been called to her home at around 8pm on the day in question after receiving a report of concern for a person.
Police Scotland officers and the emergency services attended but Joanne was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hughes was arrested the day after Joanne was found dead but was later released.
The force revealed last week, on Tuesday, March 24, that he had been charged and was due to appear in court.
He made his first court appearance last Thursday, March 26, 2026.
When the murder probe into her death was launched, Detective Chief Inspector Gordon MacKenzie said: “Our thoughts are with Joanne’s family and friends at this time.
"We are providing them with support as our investigation continues. An extensive investigation is being carried out.
"We are working to establish the full circumstances of what happened in the days prior to Joanne’s death.
“I am appealing to anyone who may have any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact us as soon as possible.
Local Area Commander, Chief Inspector Karen Cameron, said: “We understand the significant impact this will have on the community and we would like to thank everyone for their help so far.
“There will be a continued police presence in the area as enquiries continue and anyone with any concerns can speak to officers.”
