A driver who died in a head-on smash which killed another motorist after driving the wrong way along the motorway posted a defiant social media selfie the day before the collision.

John Lawson died after driving his Ford Kuga the wrong way on the M90 and crashing into a Vauxhall Corsa.

The 20-year-old driving the Corsa also died in the crash, which took place near to Junction 7 on Friday, April 17, 2026.

It has now emerged that Lawson, who will be laid to rest next week, posted a defiant selfie on social media the day before the crash.

The 44-year-old posted a picture of himself during a break while working out in the PureGym in Dundee.

The picture was taken in a mirror in the gym and shows Lawson wearing a cap, black t-shirt and grey shorts.

He celebrated 25 years of weightlifting in the post, posting weightlifting emojis and saying he was never going to give up the hobby.

He captioned the snap: "Love a good leg day first thing on a Thursday morning. #NEVERGIVINGTHISUP. 25 year and still lifting."

Police revealed previously that officers spotted Lawson driving the wrong way round a roundabout seconds before the fatal crash - and tailed him.

The officer activated the blue lights in their police car and gave chase, as Lawson drove onto the motorway the wrong way.

The police carried onto the motorway on the correct carriageway, and came across the scene of the fatal smash.

Both drivers suffered fatal injuries in the collision, and were pronounced dead at the scene, near Kinross.

The M90 was closed for around 16 hours between junctions six and nine to allow emergency services to investigate.

The northbound carriageway was also closed for a short time overnight while the investigations were carried out.

Police Scotland said today, Monday, April 27, 2026, that the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage should contact Police Scotland via 101, quoting reference 3758 of April 17, 2026.

Chief Inspector Lyne Williamson, of Police Scotland's Operational Support Division, said previously: “Whilst on routine patrol, an officer in a marked police vehicle encountered a Ford Kuga travelling towards them in the wrong direction on a roundabout, near to the entrance of junction six of the M90.

“Blue lights were activated but the Kuga continued onto the southbound carriageway of the motorway, travelling north in the wrong direction.

“The police vehicle then proceeded onto the northbound carriageway, travelling north in the correct direction, before coming across the collision between the Ford Kuga and the Vauxhall Corsa on the opposing carriageway.

“In these circumstances, it is mandatory for a referral to be made to the Police Investigation & Review Commissioner."

Raymond Brown, Head of Investigations for the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner, said: "Our thoughts are with all of those who have been affected by the tragic incident that occurred on the M90, near Kinross, on the evening of Friday 17 April.

"We are investigating the circumstances leading to this fatal collision and will report our findings to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service in due course. It would be inappropriate to comment any further at this stage."
