A man has been charged with road traffic offences following a hit-and-run which saw a seven-year-old girl rushed to hospital.
The man was charged after a police probe was launched following the incident, which took place in Kilmarnock at the weekend.
The schoolgirl was struck in the Ayrshire town's Sunnyside Road, at the junction with Shortlees Road, just before 2pm.
She was taken to the nearby University Hospital Crosshouse following the incident.
Police Scotland revealed the driver had failed to stop at the scene and that officers were following a positive line of enquiry.
And today, Thursday, May 21, 2026, the force said that a man had been charged in connection with the incident.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A man has been charged in connection with road traffic offences following a crash involving a car and child pedestrian which happened on Sunnyside Road at the junction with Shortlees Road, Kilmarnock on Sunday, 17 May, 2026.
“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
After the crash, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 1.55pm on Sunday, May 17, 2026, officers were called to a report of a crash involving a car and a child pedestrian on Sunnyside Road at the junction with Shortlees Road, Kilmarnock.
“Emergency services attended and a seven-year-old girl was taken to Crosshouse Hospital as a precaution.
“The driver of the car failed to stop at the scene and officers are following a positive line of enquiry.”
Prosecutors from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service will now decide whether the man should be prosecuted over the incident.
Following the incident, the child's mother took to social media to vent her frustration on what had happened - and the fact the driver was at large.
Amid the manhunt to track him down, she branded him "a beasty black coward" on Facebook while posting a picture of the man she claimed was responsible..
She wrote: "I'm not letting this go quiet or stories getting changed.
"This is the beasty black coward who ran my 7-year-old over and ran away like the beasty coward he is.
"Rather than hold his hands up he's in hiding. I wish nothing but the absolute worst for him.
"The state he left my baby in is evil to the core. I hope his face name and details get shared far and wide!"
