Man accused of terrorist attempted murders makes second court appearance

A man accused of carrying five terrorist attempted murders in Edinburgh has made his second court appearance.
Lewis Hawkes was detained by Police Scotland officers following a series of incidents in the capital last month.
The 36-year-old appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court this week to be fully committed for trial over the 10 charges he faces.
As well as being charged with five attempted murders, Hawkes, of Edinburgh, is charged with assault and robbery.
He is also charged with two counts of culpable and reckless conduct and two counts of breach of the peace.
Prosecutors claim that all the alleged offences were aggravated "by reason of having a terrorist connection".
He made no plea to the charges he faces and was remanded in custody when he made his second court appearance on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
Hawkes was detained after five men, aged between 22 and 39, were injured following a series of allegedly anti-Muslim incidents on Friday, June 19, 2026.
Two men were stabbed "multiple times" at the city's Broomhouse Mosque following Friday evening prayers, and were rushed to hospital.
Three more people were attacked in the city's Leith Walk, and a petrol station and a taxi were also targeted in the incident.
No future court dates have been set.
