One punch killer locked up after being convicted over amateur footballer's death

A one-punch killer is behind bars today after being convicted of causing the death of an amateur footballer.

Leon Beagan, who is also known as Gibson, attacked Andrew Lees during an incident in Renfrew, near Glasgow.

The 29-year-old, pictured above, claimed in court that Lees had thrown a punch at him after they squared up to each other outside Renfrew Leisure Centre.

But he had told his girlfriend after the altercation that he and the 27-year-old had been pushing each other, before he threw a punch.

The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday, November 5, 2023, and saw the emergency services rushing to the scene.

Lees, who was known as Panda, was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later, after suffering a ruptured artery in his neck.

Beagan was convicted of the culpable homicide of Lees, pictured below, today, Wednesday, April 15, 2026, following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

He was remanded in custody ahead of sentencing and will learn his fate when he returns to the dock next month.

Detective Inspector Nicky Beattie, of Paisley CID, said after the conviction: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Andrew at this difficult time.

"We hope this verdict brings them some measure of closure as they continue to come to terms with their loss.

"This was a senseless act of violence, and the conduct of Beagan has had devastating consequences. Such behaviour has no place in our communities.

"We remain committed to thoroughly investigating all incident of serious violence and to ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice."
