Scots e-scooter rider reported for road traffic offences as vehicle seized

A Scots e-scooter rider has been reported for road traffic offences after the vehicle was seized by cops.

Officers from Police Scotland stopped the scooter and the force revealed today, Saturday, February 7, 2026, that action was being taken against the rider.

The seizure took place in Brechin last month and was announced on the Police Scotland Tayside Facebook page today.

The post said: "Brechin response officers have seized an e-scooter after it was stopped in January. The rider has been reported for a number of road traffic offences."

Constable Butler added, "Under current legislation, e-scooters are classed as motor vehicles and are subject to road traffic law.

"This means they must meet the same legal requirements as motor vehicles, including insurance, licensing, registration and construction standards.

"As these requirements cannot currently be met, the use of privately owned e-scooters on public roads and pavements is unlawful.

"Enforcement action will be taken where offences are identified and we will continue to act to ensure the safety of all road users".

Police are reminding members of the public to ensure they understand the legal position regarding e-scooters.
