A man who subjected a woman to a four-year-long reign of mental, physical and sexual abuse has been jailed for his crimes.

Alan Turner, of Elgin, isolated the woman from friends and family, raped her and carried out a life-threatening assault on her.

He was caged for seven years and has been placed on the sex offenders register for life over his mistreatment of the woman.

The 52-year-old preyed on the woman, who can't be named for legal reasons, at addresses in Elgin and throughout Scotland between 2019 and 2023.

He repeatedly acted in an aggressive manner towards her, shouted and swore at her, made derogatory remarks to her and called her abusive names.

He isolated her from friends and family and regularly monitored her movements, calling her on her mobile and making her phone him from her employer's landline.

He also insisted she videocalled him and monitored her whereabouts, and became so controlling he took full charge of her finances and access to money.

He would wake her up while she was sleeping and make her make food for him and watch films.

And he got her to install a gambling app on his phone and used her money to bet on the site.

He regularly asked her for sex, shouted and swore at her, dragged her by the body and sexually assaulted her.

He also raped her and on one occasion attacked her so savagely she blackedd out.

On the date in question, in May 2022, he followed her to a bedroom at a property in Elgin and argued with her.

He then grabbed her by the throat, restricting her breathing, and strangled her so forcefully she lost consciousness.

He was convicted of a life-threatening assault as part of the course of abusive behaviour.

Turner was convicted last month and appeared in the dock at the High Court in Kilmarnock this week to be sentenced.

Lord Cubie made him the subject of an eight-year-long extended sentence, made up of a seven-year jail term and a 12-month period of supervision once released from custody.

The sentence was backdated to December 10, when he was remanded in custody.

He was also placed on the sex offenders register for life and made the subject of a lifelong Non-Harassment Order.

The Non-Harassment Order means he is allowed no contact with his victim for the rest of their lives.
