Teenagers arrested over vehicle theft after car theft crime wave

Two teenagers have been arrested and charged over the theft of a car - following a spate of car thefts.
The youngsters were detained by Police Scotland officers after incidents in North Berwick, Aberlady and Haddington.
In the last week, three cars have been stolen and there have been other attempts to steal cars in all three areas.
And today, Tuesday, February 17, 2026, Police Scotland revealed the youths had been arrested, as they appeal to the public for help to solve the other car thefts.
Sergeant Garrett Hughes said: "We know that online footage is being shared locally regarding the attempted thefts of cars.
"We are keen to view this footage, as we believe the incidents are linked. If you have any information, including any relevant footage, that will assist officers with their investigation, please contact police via 101, quoting incident number 0711 of Saturday, 14 February 2026.
"If you think that your car was targeted but not taken, please also get in touch.
"We are following a number of positive lines of enquiry, so as much information as possible would be beneficial to our enquiry."

The appeal released by the force said: "Police are appealing for information, especially video footage, in relation to the theft of vehicles in the North Berwick, Aberlady and Haddington areas.
"Since Tuesday, 10 February 2026, three vehicles have been stolen and further attempts to steal vehicles were made in the Lime Grove and Eeles Mount area of North Berwick, as well as areas in Aberlady and Haddington.
"The three vehicles have since been recovered. Two males, aged 16 and 15, were arrested and charged in connection with the theft of one vehicle in the Eeles Mount area. Reports will be sent to the relevant authorities. Enquiries are ongoing."
